3-methylcyclotridecan-1-one, also known as muscone, is a naturally occurring fragrance compound found in the musk gland of musk deer. It is a macrocyclic ketone with a strong and long-lasting musky odor, often described as animalic, sweet, and powdery. Used in perfumery for its fixative properties, muscone is highly valued for its ability to enhance and prolong the scent of other fragrance ingredients. Due to its scarcity and ethical concerns related to musk deer farming, 3-methylcyclotridecan-1-one is mostly synthesized in the laboratory to meet the demand for musk-scented products.
